A Historic Church | Making History

History is not was; It Is!

Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church was established in 1887. The church built in 1922 was one of the most significant projects from pioneer African American builder and designer Richard L. Brown who lived nearby in East Jacksonville. Brown went on to serve two consecutive terms in the Florida House of Representatives. Brown also purchased land in the same area and later deeded part of it to the Duval County School Board for the construction of an elementary school that was named in his honor.

Mount Olive Designated as Local Landmark

“City Council’s approval comes two months after the historic church designed by Jacksonville’s first Black architect was listed on the Historical Society’s annual endangered buildings list.”

The Jaxson Magazine highlights Historic Mount Olive A.M.E. Church as an architectural masterpiece designed by Richard Lewis Brown, Jacksonville’s earliest known African American architect.
